Knuckle's TV Series Review + Update
First impressions 4/26/2024:
I'll preface by saying I really didn't like Wade in the movies so having a series focused on him sullies my enjoyment.
The fight scenes are well choreographed, the few that there are.
I don't really think Wade is good in large doses.
I feel the show would've been better just focusing on Knuckles getting used to his new environment and having antics with Maddie, Tom, Sonic, and Tails.
Why is Tom out of town? What's he doing?
Which Robotnik did the Buyer work for? Was it Ivo or was it Gerald?
How does this tie into the 3rd movie?
Why are these two agents after Knuckles important? What's their story?
The show leaves more questions than answers and with Wade as the focus instead of Knuckles.
Also, how did they get Cary Elwes for this?
I hate to be a Debbie downer but I hope this isn't a reflection of the 3rd movie.
I'm not mad, just disappointed.
Update 4/28/2024:
Now that I've had time to sit and stew on my thoughts, the more I find this series just overall disappointing.
So much more could've been done in regards to working on Knuckles as a character instead of, what I call, the Wade Family Reunion.
Wade is a comic relief character. He's good in small doses and shouldn't have been the focus of this show. Yes, he did get some character development and background, but it was just so cringe inducing by the end.
Wade's mother and sister are awful.
Wade's mother for letting his sister get away with down right physical assault and Wade's sister Wanda who basically is an asshole throughout the entirety of her performance. When I looked up the writers to this series it actually didn't surprise me that they'd worked on SNL because Wanda is a blatant, over the top, bad SNL character. Her dialog is bad, her delivery is bad, and her on screen presence is just intolerable.
She's constantly on the offense with Wade trying to one-up him, making him feel like garbage, and their mother lets her get away with it without punishment.
The musical sequence was just completely unnecessary. We could've been given that in a proper flashback instead of Wade's fever dream.
Wade's father Pete is just a bad bowling parody of Shooter McGavin from Happy Gilmore. He even does the finger guns. He's self absorbed and it didn't surprise me in the slightest his heel turn because he's a total ass.
This series also takes place in the Dodgeball universe now with the whole ESPN 8: The Ocho. Why is this necessary?
We get barely any background on the agents. One just wants to beat people up and the other one has a twisted view of revenge. They're only relevant to kidnap Knuckles for the Buyer who isn't even important enough to get a name it seems. He worked for Robotnik, which given the context now I assume it's for the more recent one and not Gerald.
They go around collecting the quills for these inventions but it doesn't say where they got the rings from unless they just collected them from where Sonic dropped them after the second movie.
But that plot could've been better explained.
This whole show just felt like a let down to me.
While Knuckles was grounded, we could've gotten a better explanation as to the two gun agents, what their deal was, and then it could've swapped back to after Knuckles is grounded to him learning about earth with Sonic and Tails. Then they could've went on an adventure together where then you bring in the gun agents to try and capture Knuckles, give the Buyer some backstory, etc.
No big Wade family reunion, no bad SNL writing.
I'm ending this with a 4/10.
I'm hoping this isn't an omen for what we can expect for Sonic 3. After seeing this, I'm nervous for the future.
